Aptitude Test

Exemptions for non-certified Deputy Sheriff and Detention Officer Applicants

  • Possess an associate’s degree or higher from an accredited institution.
  • Submit passing scores for the following college entrance examinations. (For an overview of minimum acceptable scores, please click here.)

    • CPE
  • Certified Detention Officer Applicants with a valid Georgia Jail Officer, Correctional Officer, or Juvenile Correctional Officer Certification in good standing with the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST).
  • Certified Deputy Sheriff Applicants with a Georgia POST Basic Law Enforcement Certification that is valid and in good standing.
  • Military Veterans who produce a valid Member-4 copy of their DD-214 showing completion of a full term of service with an Honorable discharge.
    Physical Agility

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Push-Ups
      • Complete 20 proper push-ups within 60 seconds.
    • Sit-Ups
      • Complete 25 sit-ups within 60 seconds.
    • Step Test
      • Perform 120 steps on a 12-inch platform within 5 minutes. (This test measures cardiovascular and aerobic fitness.)

    Starting Salary for Deputy Sheriff $56,382.15 or Detention Officer $51,079.45

    Maximum 10% incentive above starting pay.

    Training
    All new hires will participate in either the Jail Training Program or the Field Training Program to become familiar with the policies and procedures specific to their assigned divisions. Additionally, Detention Officers are required to complete the Basic Jail Officer Certification Course within six months of their hire date.

    Those Detention Officers who complete the Jail Training Program and are interested in becoming certified deputies may enroll in our pre-mandate training class designed to prepare candidates to meet the POST physical agility course requirements and firearms qualifications. Our Training Staff teaches the Basic Law Enforcement Training Course at the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office Training Center. The Training Center staff also provides annual in-service training for certified and non-certified personnel.
